Walter Eugene Vaughan passed away peacefully at his home Saturday April 4, 2026.

Gene was born March 30, 1947 to the late Rev. Bennon Vaughan and Mrs. Lillian B. Vaughan, in Chatham County, NC where he spent his early years on his grandparents dairy farm.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kay G. Vaughan; daughter, Cathy Vaughan; son, Kenneth Vaughan (Emily); grandson, Troy Harris; and sisters, Deborah Smith, Susan Williams, and LaMyra Pearson.

Gene was a machinist at General Electric Company for seventeen years, a reserve deputy for Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department for sixteen years, and a rural letter carrier for twenty-eight years. He was a member of the Lenoir Aviation Club where he got his pilot’s license.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 1:00PM to 2:00PM at Mackie Funeral Service.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00PM with  Pastor Jacob Crowder officiating in the Chapel of Mackie Funeral Service

Interment will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls with Brian Williams, Troy Harris, Sam Mackey, Isaac Pearson, Wayne Bouldin, and Jim Bradley serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Kolbin Mackey, Jake Rhodes, and Jerry Ingram.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any hospice or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
