Sharon McGee Oxford, 76, of Grantie Falls, passed away peacefully on June 16th, 2026 at the Forlines Patient Care Unit in Hudson.
She was born on December 22, 1949, to Marshall Lee McGee and Faye Bowman McGee in Sawmills, NC. Initially at Sawmills Elementary School and later at Hudson High School, she excelled academically and developed into a superb basketball player. She graduated with highest honors from Lenoir Rhyne University with a Bachelor's degree in teaching in 1972.
On July 31st, 1971, she married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Glenn Oxford of Granite Falls, NC. As a teacher for 35 years at Sawmills and Hudson Elementary Schools, she educated hundreds of students and was recognized as Sawmills Elementary School teacher of the year on multiple occasions. At work, she developed close lifelong friendships with her colleagues. Teaching was not her only vocation. In upholding her marriage vows, she mastered the arts of rounding up escaped cattle, growing row crops, and baling hay.
In retirement, she relished the role of “Nene” and entertained her five adoring grandchildren nonstop with summers by the pool, kitchen table Monopoly games, sewing projects, and Tweetsie Railroad adventures–even if that role required numerous cross-country flights.
She was a lifelong member of Philadelphia Lutheran Church, where she was active on the Church Council, the Women of ELCA group, and Lutheran World Relief.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of 40 years, Bob. She is survived by her sister Diane and husband Art Chaffee of Hickory, her brother Roger and wife Elaine McGee of Oak Island, her son Rob and wife Molly Oxford of Asheville, her son Justin Oxford and partner Lillian Nave of Granite Falls, and her five grandchildren: Winn, Jack, Harriotte, Emily, and Stearns Oxford.
She will be tremendously missed.
A memorial service will be held 11:00AM Friday, June 19, 2026 at Philadelphia Lutheran Church with Bishop Lenoard Bolick officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of Philadelphia Lutheran Church.
